The government of Iran has announced the formation of a fact-finding and inquiry committee to investigate the recent wave of deadly protests that swept across the country, resulting in thousands of reported deaths and widespread unrest.
According to official statements, the protests began in late December 2025 over worsening economic conditions, including soaring inflation, currency depreciation, and rising living costs. What started as demonstrations over bread prices and fuel shortages quickly escalated into broader anti-government protests in multiple cities.
Government spokeswoman Fatemeh Mohajerani confirmed that the newly established committee will gather documents, review security reports, and collect testimonies from relevant institutions to determine the causes of the unrest and the circumstances surrounding the fatalities. She stated that the panel includes representatives from judicial, security, and administrative bodies.
Official figures released by authorities indicate that over 3,000 people were killed, though independent observers and rights groups claim the actual toll may be higher. Iranian officials have maintained that many of those killed were security personnel or civilians caught in clashes, while also blaming what they described as “foreign-backed elements” for escalating the violence.
President Masoud Pezeshkian reportedly directed that the investigation be thorough and transparent, with findings to be compiled into a report that could lead to administrative or legal action where necessary.
The announcement comes amid growing domestic and international pressure for accountability and clarity over the state’s response to the demonstrations. Critics have called for an independent and impartial investigation, arguing that the inquiry’s credibility will depend on its transparency and willingness to address allegations of excessive force by security agencies.
Authorities say the committee’s findings will be made public once the review is completed, though no timeline has been given for when the final report will be released.
