A Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) officer was killed, and a patrol vehicle set on fire by suspected illegal miners during an operation in Zuzungi, Kataeregi, Katcha Local Government Area, Niger State, on February 11, 2026.
The officer was part of a joint security team comprising the NSCDC, Nigeria Police Force (NPF), and local security operatives, deployed to clamp down on illegal mining activities and prevent mineral smuggling. Officials say the team came under sudden armed attack while monitoring illicit mining sites operated by gangs commonly known as “galamsey” operators.
Following the attack, the Federal Government and the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, condemned the killing, describing it as a tragic and criminal act. Alake assured that security and intelligence agencies have been placed on high alert to apprehend the perpetrators, who will face the full weight of the law.
Authorities said the incident underscores the risks faced by security personnel enforcing mining laws in areas where illegal mining is rampant. Dr. Alake also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protect lawful mining operations, provide enhanced support for enforcement officers, and work with local communities to report illegal activities.
Investigations into the attack are ongoing, and a manhunt has been launched to bring those responsible to justice. Officials warn that the government will not tolerate violence against security agents, emphasizing that illegal mining operations will continue to face strict crackdowns.
