In a closely watched contest during the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate Mohammed Kasim has been officially declared the winner of the Gwagwalada Area Council chairmanship election.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced the results early Sunday after votes from polling units across Gwagwalada were collated. According to the returning officer, Professor Philip Akpeni, Kasim scored 22,165 votes, defeating his closest rival from the All Progressives Congress (APC), who polled 17,788 votes in the chairmanship race. Other candidates, including those from smaller parties, trailed with significantly fewer votes.
INEC described the electoral process as peaceful and compliant with electoral guidelines, with results canvassed from all 10 wards that make up the Gwagwalada Area Council. Supporters of the PDP celebrated the victory in parts of Gwagwalada town, waving party flags and expressing optimism about the incoming leadership.
The win marks an important moment for the PDP in the FCT’s local government polls, reflecting solid grassroots support in Gwagwalada despite broader political shifts in other areas. As the council transitions to a new administration, residents and party stakeholders are looking forward to Kasim’s plans for local development, service delivery, and community engagement.
