During the ongoing Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has taken an early lead in Nyanya, even as voter turnout remained noticeably low in the community’s polling units.

Reports from the field indicate that voting, which began early in the morning, was marked by relatively few registered voters showing up compared with previous election cycles. Many residents cited factors such as work, personal commitments and lack of awareness as reasons for staying away from the polls, creating a subdued atmosphere around several polling centres in Nyanya.

Despite the low turnout, results from a number of polling units in Nyanya showed the APC ahead in the chairmanship and councillorship categories, with party agents reporting a significant proportion of ballots cast in favour of APC candidates. Observers noted that while the early trend favours the ruling party, outcomes could shift as more units close and results are collated across the wider area council.

Election officials from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) were present at the polling units to manage accreditation using the Bi-Modal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and ensure orderly conduct, even as turnout remained a concern. Security personnel were also deployed across the area to uphold peace and prevent disruptions.

Residents and political watchers alike have expressed mixed feelings — some see the early APC lead as indicative of the party’s organisational strength in the area, while others lamented the low voter engagement, saying it undermines the democratic spirit of the exercise.

As voting continues through the day and results begin to filter in, attention will shift to whether turnout improves later or if the pattern in Nyanya reflects a broader trend across other parts of the FCT.
