The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has uncovered a suspected child trafficking ring operating under the guise of an orphanage home in the Saburi area of Abuja, rescuing 21 children in the process, officials say.
Acting on a petition from concerned residents, police launched a discreet investigation into suspicious activities at the facility before discovering the network. A statement by the FCT Police Command indicated that preliminary findings suggested the operators were targeting vulnerable families, offering access to education and better opportunities, and then allegedly trafficking children to prospective buyers in various parts of the country.
The rescued children are currently undergoing procedures aimed at reuniting them with their biological parents, while efforts continue to locate the remaining victims and apprehend suspects connected with the syndicate, the police added.
Authorities urged parents and guardians to exercise vigilance, warning that not all offers of sponsorship or educational opportunities are genuine and encouraging people to report suspicious activities to security agencies.
The operation highlights increased police focus on dismantling trafficking networks that exploit orphanage covers to carry out illicit child exploitation, reflecting broader efforts by law enforcement to protect vulnerable members of society.
