Former Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, demanding that he withdraw what he described as a “false and misleading” statement concerning Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and a recent high-profile political meeting in Minna, Niger State.
The controversy stems from a closed-door visit by Atiku and Governor Makinde to former military Head of State Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida at his Minna residence. While Atiku’s camp reportedly described the visit as a routine political courtesy call, Fayose alleged that the meeting involved strategic discussions ahead of the 2027 general elections, including possible coalition arrangements.
Fayose claimed that during the Minna meeting, conversations allegedly touched on potential political alignments, including speculation about Makinde’s future role in a broader opposition alliance. He further suggested there were undertakings related to financial and delegate support — allegations that Atiku’s media aide, Phrank Shaibu, strongly denied, dismissing them as “reckless fabrications” and a “shameless concoction.”
Reacting to the rebuttal, Fayose insisted that he stands by his claims and challenged Atiku to publicly retract the denial within 48 hours. He warned that failure to do so would compel him to “spill more details” about what transpired at the Minna meeting, including references to discussions involving other key political figures.
The exchange has intensified speculation about emerging alliances and internal tensions within opposition circles as political actors begin early maneuvering ahead of 2027. Analysts say the public spat highlights deeper disagreements over leadership direction, trust, and strategy among influential politicians.
As of the time of reporting, Atiku has not personally responded to Fayose’s ultimatum, and Governor Makinde has also remained publicly silent on the matter. The unfolding situation is expected to shape conversations around coalition building and party unity in the coming months.
