Former chairman of the defunct Presidential Task Force on Pension Reforms, Dr Abdulrasheed Maina, has been hospitalised after reportedly slumping in Abuja.

According to reports, Maina collapsed on Tuesday evening while attempting to gain access to his office in the Federal Capital Territory. Sources said the incident was linked to complications arising from a long-standing knee injury, which allegedly caused him to lose his balance and fall, hitting his head in the process.

He was said to have received immediate first aid at the scene before being rushed to a private hospital in Abuja, where he is currently undergoing treatment and medical observation. His condition is yet to be fully disclosed, but sources close to the family said doctors are monitoring him closely.

A statement released by his media aide explained that Maina had been battling health challenges for some time and appealed to the public to keep him in their prayers while respecting the family’s privacy. There were also indications that medical evacuation may be considered if his condition does not improve.

Maina remains one of Nigeria’s most controversial public figures. He rose to prominence as head of the pension reform task force but later became embroiled in a major pension fund fraud scandal. In 2021, a Federal High Court in Abuja convicted him on money-laundering charges involving billions of naira and sentenced him to prison, a verdict later upheld by the Court of Appeal.

Despite his conviction, Maina was released from custody in 2025 after serving part of his sentence, reportedly benefiting from statutory remission.

News of his sudden collapse and hospitalisation has sparked mixed reactions across social media, with some Nigerians expressing concern over his health, while others revisited debates surrounding his controversial public service record.
