Dr. Tunde Lemo, former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), has officially declared his interest in contesting the 2027 governorship election in Ogun State, setting the stage for a high-profile race in the Southwest.
Lemo made his announcement on Wednesday during the All Progressives Congress (APC) ward congress at Ita‑Agemo, Isale‑Igbein, in Abeokuta, the state capital. Addressing party members, he said his decision to run stems from a desire to accelerate grassroots development, enhance local economic opportunities, and boost sectors such as agriculture, small and medium enterprises, and infrastructure.
Highlighting his commitment to inclusive governance, Lemo praised the peaceful conduct of the APC ward congress and lauded the party’s leadership under President Bola Tinubu and Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun. He also pointed to ongoing projects, including the Agro-Cargo Airport, as evidence of the state’s potential for economic growth and industrialisation.
While Lemo did not explicitly campaign for the party’s nomination at the congress, he emphasised faith in divine guidance, noting that “everything is in the hands of God”. Nonetheless, his national profile, economic expertise, and experience in public finance position him as a strong contender in what promises to be a competitive race.
