Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El‑Rufai, has stated that he and President Bola Tinubu were never personal friends, insisting their relationship was strictly political and professional.

In an interview, El‑Rufai said his support for Tinubu during the 2023 presidential election was based on party loyalty and strategic considerations, not personal ties. “I was never Tinubu’s friend. Our relationship was never like the one I had with General Buhari,” he said, stressing that his involvement was aligned with APC’s internal decisions and zoning arrangements, rather than friendship.

He added that ideological differences and contrasting approaches to governance eventually created a rift between him and the president. El‑Rufai emphasized that his political engagement has always been guided by principle and public service, and not personal allegiance.

The former governor’s comments highlight the distinction between political alliances and personal friendships among Nigeria’s top leaders and provide context for his recent critiques of the administration.
