A member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Billy Osawaru, has dismissed claims that the Edo State Government was involved in the reported attack on the convoy of former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, describing such allegations as unfounded and politically motivated.

Osawaru, who represents the Orhionmwon/Uhunmwode Federal Constituency, spoke in Abuja on Thursday, rejecting accusations made by an Anambra lawmaker that the February 24, 2026 incident in Benin City was orchestrated by officials of the Edo government. He said there is no credible evidence linking Governor Monday Okpebholo or other state officials to the incident and noted that no security agency has substantiated such claims.

“It is dangerous to stand before the press and insinuate state-sponsored violence without proof,” Osawaru said, warning that such claims could inflame political tensions in an already charged environment. He urged political actors to await the outcome of official investigations rather than engage in “trial by media.”

The lawmaker reiterated that the state government condemns violence regardless of political affiliation and encouraged a transparent investigation by security agencies to determine the facts surrounding the reported attack.
