The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has dismissed claims that it is importing finished petroleum products into Nigeria, clarifying that the facility does not bring in refined fuel such as petrol or diesel.
Speaking on the issue, the refinery’s Managing Director, David Bird, explained that reports suggesting fuel importation are based on a misunderstanding of refinery operations. According to him, the refinery only imports intermediate feedstocks, which are raw or semi-processed materials used as inputs for further refining — a standard practice in modern refineries worldwide.
He stressed that these materials are not finished fuels and are fully processed at the Lekki refinery into market-ready products that meet Nigerian and international quality standards before distribution. “All petrol, diesel and aviation fuel supplied by Dangote Refinery are refined locally,” the MD said.
The clarification comes amid public debate over fuel supply and Nigeria’s long-standing dependence on imported petroleum products. Industry analysts say the Dangote Refinery was built to reduce fuel importation, strengthen energy security, and stabilise supply in the domestic market.
Dangote officials also urged the public and media to ensure accurate reporting, warning that misinformation could undermine confidence in local refining efforts. The refinery reiterated its commitment to supporting Nigeria’s downstream sector and cutting reliance on foreign fuel imports.
