A Lagos State Coroner’s Court has adjourned proceedings and scheduled a formal inquest into the death of Master Nkanu Nnamdi Esege, the 21-month-old son of renowned Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and Dr. Ivara Esege, to begin on April 14, 2026.

The preliminary session took place on February 25, 2026, at the Yaba Magistrate Court before Magistrate Atinuke Adetunji, who fixed the date for the full inquiry. The inquest is being pursued after the child’s tragic death on January 7, 2026, following medical procedures at Atlantis Hospital and Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital in Lagos.

At the hearing, counsel for the family, Professor Kemi Pinheiro (SAN), said evidence would be presented alleging gross medical negligence, including concerns about drug administration, diagnosis and monitoring during treatment. The Lagos State Government, represented by the Attorney-General, supported the inquest, with hospitals involved also present through their legal teams.

The coroner directed that all parties file witness statements before the April session. Among the evidence the family seeks to compel are medical records, monitoring data and CCTV footage from the hospitals. Independent medical experts are also expected to testify.

The purpose of the inquest is to determine the cause and circumstances of the child’s death, with the court emphasising the need to examine all relevant information, including expert testimony, to ensure a thorough inquiry.
