A forest guard has been killed and one bandit neutralized during a gunfight in Koro community, Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State, security sources have confirmed. The confrontation occurred when forest guards, acting on intelligence about suspected armed men operating in the forests, moved in alongside local vigilantes to intercept the group.
The operation quickly escalated into a firefight after the suspects allegedly ambushed the forest operatives. One forest guard, identified as Samuel, was shot and later pronounced dead, while a bandit was killed during the clash. Several motorcycles belonging to the gang were reportedly burned or destroyed in the skirmish.
The Kwara State Police Commissioner, Adekimi Ojo, said the incident stemmed from a rapid response to suspicious activity, noting that police had not initially been involved, which contributed to the intensity of the encounter. Samuel’s weapon, along with 15 rounds of ammunition, was recovered following the clash.
Security officials have since redeployed additional forest guards and local vigilantes to Koro to prevent further attacks and safeguard the community. Investigations are ongoing as authorities continue efforts to track down remaining members of the bandit group.
