The Anambra State Physical Planning and Development Agency (ASPPDA) has demolished several shanties and unauthorised structures in a market within the state as part of efforts to enforce planning regulations and improve safety.
Officials said the affected structures were erected without approval and had encroached on walkways and designated spaces, creating obstruction, congestion and fire risks. The demolition followed repeated warnings to traders and property owners to remove the illegal structures.
Heavy equipment was deployed during the operation, while security personnel were on ground to maintain order. The agency stated that the exercise was necessary to restore proper layout and ensure compliance with urban planning and safety standards.
While some traders welcomed the action, citing improved accessibility and safety, others expressed concern over the loss of their stalls and appealed for relocation or support from the government.
