In the wake of recent security challenges that shook parts of Ebonyi State, Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru has relaxed the statewide curfew and signalled intentions to reopen schools, steps seen as efforts to restore stability and normalcy after a spate of killings that traumatised communities.
The decision comes after intense consultations between the state government, security agencies and community leaders following a series of violent incidents that prompted the imposition of strict movement restrictions days earlier. While the curfew originally introduced to restrict nocturnal movements and curb further attacks remains in place overnight, its relaxation allows greater freedom of movement during daytime hours, a move that has been welcomed by residents eager to resume economic and social activities.
Governor Nwifuru also stated that the government is considering reopening schools that were temporarily closed amid safety concerns. Authorities say the objective is to ensure that students can return to classrooms in a secure environment, after thorough consultations with security officials and community stakeholders about current threat levels and protective measures.
Speaking at a recent briefing, the governor emphasised the importance of balancing community security with the necessity of normal life. He expressed confidence that the combination of eased restrictions and coordinated security deployments will allow citizens to move about more freely while still maintaining vigilance against potential threats.
Residents and traders, who had experienced severe disruptions due to earlier restrictions, welcomed the easing of the curfew, saying it will allow markets to operate normally and ease the economic strain on families.
Security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force, the Army and local vigilante groups, remain on alert, particularly in hotspots previously affected by violence. The state government reiterated its commitment to strengthening intelligence gathering and community policing to prevent further incidents.
While the decision to relax the curfew and consider school reopenings is seen as a positive step, authorities emphasised that security assessments will continue, and adjustments could be made should the situation change.
For many residents, the move represents hope a gradual return to routine and a sign that peace can be restored even after tragedy.
