The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has condemned what it described as an attempted arrest of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai at an airport, saying the incident amounts to harassment and political persecution.
In a statement signed by the party’s national leadership, the ADC said it views the reported incident as part of a broader pattern of targeting opposition figures, especially those who have been openly critical of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) administration.
According to the ADC, El-Rufai was accosted by security operatives while at the airport, and there were efforts to detain him without clear charges or explanation. The party said such actions, if truly carried out, undermine democratic norms and violate the rights of citizens to move freely and participate in political activities without fear.
The ADC called on relevant authorities to provide a full explanation of the circumstances surrounding the alleged arrest attempt and urged that any law enforcement action be guided by due process, transparency and respect for the rule of law.
The party also used the development to reiterate its earlier warnings about what it described as the erosion of democratic space in Nigeria, charging that the political environment has become increasingly hostile for opposition parties and dissenting voices.
ADC leaders appealed to Nigerians and civil society groups to remain vigilant and stand against what they termed “politically motivated persecution,” while reaffirming their support for El-Rufai’s constitutional rights and liberties.
