At least 14 people who were trapped during a fire outbreak at Terminal 1 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos have been safely rescued, and the affected building is set to undergo a structural integrity assessment, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has confirmed.

The fire, which broke out earlier this week in the old section of Terminal 1, prompted the activation of emergency protocols involving FAAN’s firefighting team and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service. Smoke was seen rising from the terminal, which led to evacuations as responders rushed to contain the blaze.

FAAN Managing Director Olubunmi Kuku said all 14 individuals who were initially trapped — including air traffic control personnel and other staff — were successfully removed from the building with no fatalities reported. Six people sustained injuries and are in stable condition, with one person transferred to the FAAN Headquarters Hospital for further evaluation.

With the fire now under control, FAAN said investigations into its cause have begun. Crucially, civil and structural engineers will carry out checks on the affected terminal to determine whether the building remains safe and what remedial actions may be needed before any further use.

The blaze also led to temporary disruptions in flight operations, with some international services being diverted while emergency responses were ongoing, though normal airport activities were expected to resume once safety assessments are completed.
