What started as a fanbase argument in early January has snowballed into one of the most explosive celebrity clashes Nigerian social media has seen in recent times, as Wizkid and Seun Kuti went head-to-head over the legacy of Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.

The tension first surfaced when Seun Kuti posted a lengthy Instagram video aimed squarely at Wizkid’s fanbase, popularly known as Wizkid FC. Visibly angry, Seun accused the fans of constantly dragging his late father’s name into online music debates and using Fela’s legacy to boost arguments in favour of Wizkid. He warned them bluntly, saying, “Keep Fela’s name out of your mouths,” and stressed that his father’s impact went far beyond music fame or chart success.

According to Seun, Fela was a revolutionary figure whose influence shaped political consciousness and cultural resistance, insisting that comparing him to any contemporary artiste was ignorant and disrespectful. The video quickly went viral and set the stage for what would soon turn into a direct confrontation.

After days of backlash and online arguments, Wizkid broke his silence with a barrage of posts on Instagram Stories and X. In a move that shocked many, the Grammy-winning singer fired back at Seun Kuti with the statement, “I’m bigger than your father,” a comment that instantly ignited outrage across social media.

Wizkid did not stop there. He went further, calling Seun a “fool at 40” and mocking him for what he described as misplaced priorities. In another post, Wizkid wrote, “Fela fight for freedom, this fool dey fight FC,” suggesting that Seun was more concerned with online fan wars than meaningful activism. He also accused Seun of bitterness and told him to stop hiding behind his father’s legacy.

Seun Kuti responded with sarcasm rather than retreat. In his reply, he told Wizkid to “just be yourself, short man. You are also great,” while maintaining that his original comments were never meant to attack Wizkid personally. He insisted that his anger was directed at fans who, in his view, were attempting to rewrite history and reduce Fela’s revolutionary legacy to online bragging rights.

The back-and-forth immediately split social media into hostile camps. Wizkid FC defended the singer fiercely, pointing to his global success, awards and influence, while critics slammed his comments as disrespectful and unnecessarily personal. Supporters of Seun Kuti praised him for standing firm and protecting his father’s legacy, arguing that some figures should not be dragged into fanbase comparisons.

As the exchange continued to trend, it reignited a broader debate about fame, legacy and respect within Nigeria’s music industry. The clash highlighted the growing tension between celebrating modern Afrobeats dominance and acknowledging the pioneers whose work laid the foundation for Nigeria’s global recognition.

For now, the dust has yet to fully settle, but one thing is clear: when legacy meets modern stardom, the internet will always choose chaos.
