The Ogun State Government has put a pause on the ongoing process to select a new Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland. The decision comes after several petitions were filed and security concerns were raised about the selection process.
In a letter dated January 20, 2026, the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs instructed that all activities connected to choosing the new monarch be suspended immediately. The government said the suspension was necessary to maintain peace, ensure fairness, and protect the dignity of the Awujale throne.
The Awujale stool became vacant following the death of Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, who reigned over Ijebuland for more than six decades. His passing sparked widespread interest and competition among the ruling houses and kingmakers involved in selecting his successor.
Authorities have clarified that the suspension is temporary. All kingmakers and ruling houses have been told to wait for further directives from the state government before resuming any part of the selection process.
As the pause continues, residents and observers across Ijebuland are calling for transparency, unity, and strict adherence to tradition to ensure that when the selection resumes, it is free, fair, and peaceful.
