The Kano State Government has initiated a public health campaign to raise awareness about whooping cough (pertussis) and provide free medication to residents, following reports of suspected cases in the state. The outreach focused on communities in Bebeji Local Government Area, where health workers engaged residents and offered treatment support.
The initiative, coordinated by the Kano State Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (KNCDC), aims to protect children, who are most vulnerable to the disease. Teams of healthcare workers visited households, providing information on symptoms, prevention, and the importance of seeking prompt medical care.
KNCDC Director-General, Prof. Muhammad Adamu Abbas, urged parents and caregivers to be vigilant, take children showing signs of illness to health facilities immediately, and use the free medications provided as advised. He stressed that early detection and treatment are critical in preventing complications from the disease.
Authorities said the campaign is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen public health infrastructure, improve disease surveillance, and respond quickly to potential outbreaks across Kano State. Residents were encouraged to participate actively and follow medical guidance to safeguard themselves and their families.
