The Federal Government has launched a new agricultural support programme in Kogi State aimed at boosting food production, empowering farmers, and improving rural livelihoods across the state. The programme was officially unveiled in Lokoja as part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s agricultural sector and enhance food security.

The initiative is being implemented in collaboration with the International Fund for Agricultural Development through the Value Chain Development Programme. As part of the rollout, farmers across different communities in Kogi received improved seeds, fertilisers, herbicides, and other essential farming inputs to support both wet and dry season farming.

In addition to farm inputs, the programme also includes the distribution of mechanised equipment such as power tillers and processing machines to help farmers improve efficiency and increase output. Beneficiaries are expected to use the equipment to expand cultivation and reduce the burden of manual labour.

The programme also places strong emphasis on capacity building. Farmers and youths are being trained in modern agricultural practices, equipment handling, and maintenance skills to support long-term productivity and sustainability within the state.

Officials at the launch said the initiative is designed to stimulate rural economic growth, create jobs, and ensure that farmers can cultivate more land and achieve better yields. They stressed the importance of collaboration between the federal and state governments in sustaining agricultural development.

Farmers who benefited from the programme expressed appreciation, noting that access to quality inputs and equipment would help increase production, improve income, and strengthen food supply in their communities.

The agricultural support programme forms part of the Federal Government’s broader strategy to revitalise agriculture and empower smallholder farmers as key contributors to Nigeria’s economy.
