Suspected Boko Haram insurgents have killed a newly promoted Lieutenant Colonel and six other soldiers during an ambush in Borno State. The attack reportedly occurred while troops were on a military operation along the Maiduguri–Damasak axis in Mobbar Local Government Area.

Sources within the military said the officer, who was recently elevated from the rank of Major, was leading the patrol when the convoy was attacked with improvised explosive devices and heavy gunfire. The ambush caught the troops off guard, resulting in multiple casualties on the spot.

In addition to the seven soldiers confirmed dead, several others were said to have sustained serious injuries, while a number of personnel are still unaccounted for following the incident. The bodies of the slain officers and soldiers were later evacuated to a military medical facility in Maiduguri.

The attack highlights the continued security challenges in parts of Borno State, where Boko Haram and other insurgent groups remain active despite sustained military operations. Residents and security analysts have repeatedly called for improved intelligence gathering and better protection for troops operating in volatile areas.

The Nigerian Army has yet to release an official statement on the incident, but investigations are ongoing as efforts continue to track down the insurgents responsible for the deadly ambush.
