The Anambra State Government and traders in Onitsha have reached a consensus on a phased approach to remodelling the iconic Onitsha Main Market, one of the largest commercial hubs in West Africa. The agreement comes after weeks of discussions aimed at balancing the need for infrastructural improvements with the interests of traders who rely on the market for their livelihoods.
Under the new plan, market renovations will be carried out in stages, ensuring that sections of the market remain operational while construction work is ongoing. Traders welcomed the phased approach, noting that it would prevent total disruption of business and allow gradual relocation of stalls as necessary.
Government officials said the remodelling project will include modernized stalls, improved drainage systems, enhanced security infrastructure, and better road networks within and around the market. The plan is also expected to introduce fire safety measures, waste management solutions, and organized parking facilities to reduce congestion and improve the shopping experience for both traders and customers.
Speaking during a stakeholder meeting, the Commissioner for Commerce, Industry, and Cooperatives, emphasized the government’s commitment to creating a world-class market while preserving the economic activities that drive Onitsha’s reputation as a major trading hub. Traders, for their part, pledged to cooperate with authorities and ensure smooth implementation of the project.
The phased remodelling of Onitsha Main Market is seen as a landmark initiative that aims to boost trade, enhance urban aesthetics, and improve overall market safety, setting a model for similar markets across the state and the region.
