A 13-year-old boy has died after a shark attacked him while he was swimming at Praia Del Chifre in Olinda, Pernambuco, northeastern Brazil. The attack occurred on Thursday, January 29, 2026, when the boy was in the water with friends. He suffered severe injuries and was rushed to a local hospital but later died from blood loss.

Authorities in Pernambuco, a state known for frequent shark incidents along its coastline, confirmed the attack and said the area has warning signs advising against swimming due to shark activity. Despite these warnings, many beachgoers still enter the water, particularly at popular beaches.

Pernambuco has recorded more than 80 shark attacks since 1992, including several fatalities. Officials said the latest tragedy highlights the ongoing risks to swimmers and the importance of adhering to posted safety measures.

The State Committee for Monitoring Shark Incidents (CEMIT) announced plans to increase monitoring efforts, including the reinstatement of a program that tracks sharks using microchips to better understand their movements and improve swimmer safety.

The attack has renewed concerns about beach safety in the region, especially as Pernambuco attracts large crowds during peak tourism seasons, including Carnival. Authorities continue to urge residents and visitors to exercise caution and avoid swimming in areas with active shark warnings.
