The Lagos State Government has
launched an investigation into a viral social media video allegedly showing
students of Excel College, located at No. 15, Ansarudeen Street, Off Egbe Road,
Ejigbo, engaging in inappropriate behavior.
In the video, a group of
shirtless young men — believed to be students — can be seen passing around a
substance suspected to be marijuana while drinking from a bottle of wine,
reportedly inside their hostel.
A concerned citizen who first
shared the video online called for urgent action, warning that such behavior
must not be tolerated among students.
Reacting to the incident, the
Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Alli-Balogun, confirmed
on Wednesday that the Ministry is aware of the viral clip and has ordered an
investigation. The statement was released through the Ministry’s Public Affairs
Officer, Mr. Kayode Sutton.
“The Ministry of Basic and
Secondary Education is aware of the matter, and the relevant agency has
directed a thorough investigation and further necessary action,” the statement
read.
According to the Commissioner, a
special investigative panel from the Office of Education Quality Assurance
(OEQA) has been tasked with probing the incident to determine the authenticity
of the video and the identities of those involved.
He stressed that the Lagos State
Government operates a zero-tolerance policy towards drug use and misconduct in
both public and private schools, and will ensure due diligence in handling the
case.
“Our focus remains on
safeguarding the integrity of the education system. Appropriate action will be
taken once the investigation is concluded,” the Commissioner assured.
