Buckingham Palace has confirmed
that the funeral of the Duchess of Kent will take place on 16 September, with
King Charles and Queen Camilla in attendance.
Katharine, Duchess of Kent, who
became the oldest living member of the Royal Family following the death of
Queen Elizabeth II in 2022, passed away peacefully late Thursday at Kensington
Palace. She was 92.
According to a statement from the
Palace, her coffin will rest in the private chapel at Kensington Palace before
being moved to Westminster Cathedral on 15 September. A funeral mass will be
held at the cathedral at 2 p.m. on 16 September, followed by her burial at
Frogmore, Windsor.
Buckingham Palace also confirmed
that flags will fly at half-mast across all royal residences on the day of her
funeral.
Beyond her royal duties,
Katharine was celebrated as a talented pianist, organist, and singer. In a move
that set her apart, she voluntarily dropped her HRH title and chose to be known
simply as Mrs. Kent. She stepped back from royal life and spent 13 years
teaching music at a primary school in Hull, earning admiration for her humility
and passion for education.
Often called the "Wimbledon
Royal" for her regular appearances at the tennis tournament, Katharine
married Prince Edward, Duke of Kent — a cousin of the late Queen Elizabeth II —
in a grand ceremony at York Minster in 1961.
She is survived by their three
children: George, Earl of St Andrews, Lady Helen Windsor, and Lord Nicholas
Windsor.
