ABUJA, Nigeria — Former Minister of Transportation and ex-Rivers State governor, Rotimi Amaechi, has declared that he can unseat President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election — but only if he clinches the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ticket.

Speaking during an X Spaces conversation on Saturday, August 9, 2025, Amaechi said that while he had never directly contested against Tinubu, he knew the president’s “strengths” and “weaknesses” well enough to secure victory.

“I know Tinubu very well… if allowed to fly the flag of ADC, I will defeat Tinubu for sure,” Amaechi stated confidently.

The former APC chieftain stressed that he had never participated in election rigging, claiming he repeatedly turned down appointments to serve on the party’s election planning committees.

“I challenge any politician, living or dead, to come forward and say I was part of rigging,” he said, promising to reveal inside details about such committees if he wins the ADC primaries.

Amaechi alleged that electoral malpractice in Nigeria is often orchestrated by state governors, with public funds diverted through government agencies to influence elections.

“They will bring governors, they will go to government agencies and get money, but the rest, I don’t want to say it until I win primaries,” he hinted.

He vowed to make the elimination of electoral fraud a central pillar of his presidency.

“I will never participate in any rigging whatsoever… What I promise to do now, going forward, is to stop rigging.”

The former minister also said he would only apologise for wrongdoing if concrete evidence of his involvement in malpractice emerged.

On the 2023 polls, Amaechi acknowledged that Peter Obi, Labour Party’s presidential candidate, likely won in Rivers State.

“I would agree to an extent that Peter Obi won in Rivers State, but unfortunately, the result that came out was different. How it happened, I have no idea.”

Amaechi, who on July 3 pledged to serve only one term if elected in 2027, reiterated his support for Nigeria’s unwritten rotational power agreement between the north and south.
