A Nigerian Army soldier was killed and another injured after armed men suspected to be kidnappers attacked security personnel at Magbon Village in the Mowe area of Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area, Ogun State. The incident occurred during an attempted abduction targeting Chinese expatriates working at a dredging site.

According to the Nigerian Army, troops of the 35 Artillery Brigade and police officers responded to a distress call from the site when they came under attack from the gunmen, leading to a fierce gun battle. One suspected kidnapper was killed during the exchange of fire.

The attackers reportedly fled through nearby forests toward the Ogun River, taking five hostages as human shields. The Army said four of the hostages were later killed by the fleeing gunmen, while one victim managed to escape and alert security operatives.

In the confrontation:

  • One soldier was killed.
  • Another soldier sustained gunshot injuries.
  • Two police officers were also wounded.
  • One suspected kidnapper was neutralized.

Army spokesman Major Idereghi Akari said the deceased soldier and the recovered bodies of the hostages were deposited at General Hospital, Sagamu, while the injured security personnel are receiving treatment. Security forces have since intensified patrols and surveillance in the area to track down the fleeing suspects.

The incident has heightened concerns about kidnapping and violent crime along the Mowe–Ibafo corridor, a major gateway between Ogun State and Lagos State.
