No fewer than 33 people have been killed following a brutal attack by suspected bandits on a community in Kebbi State, deepening security concerns in Nigeria’s northwest region.
The deadly raid reportedly occurred in a rural settlement within Arewa Local Government Area, where heavily armed assailants stormed the community, shooting indiscriminately and setting parts of the village ablaze. Eyewitnesses said the attackers arrived in large numbers, overpowering local vigilantes and leaving residents scrambling for safety.
Local authorities confirmed the casualty figure, noting that several others sustained varying degrees of injuries during the assault. Survivors described scenes of chaos as families fled into nearby bushes to escape the violence. Homes and food supplies were also said to have been destroyed, compounding the hardship faced by the affected community.
Security operatives were later deployed to the area to restore order and prevent further attacks. While investigations are ongoing, officials have assured residents that efforts are being intensified to track down the perpetrators and strengthen security presence across vulnerable communities.
Kebbi State, like several parts of northern Nigeria, has witnessed recurring attacks by armed groups, often targeting remote villages where security coverage is limited. The latest killings have sparked renewed calls for more proactive measures to safeguard lives and property, particularly in rural areas frequently exposed to banditry.
Community leaders have appealed for sustained military operations and improved intelligence gathering to curb the wave of violence, stressing that repeated attacks are displacing families and crippling local economic activities.
The incident once again underscores the persistent security challenges facing the region, as residents mourn their dead and demand urgent government intervention to prevent further bloodshed
