Barely days after a major blaze ravaged Singer Market, another fire has broken out in a Kano market, leaving traders counting fresh losses and raising concerns over recurring market infernos in the state.
The latest incident occurred in the early hours of Friday at Fatima Simra Multi-Purpose Market located in the Dakata area. The fire reportedly started around 5:40 a.m., quickly spreading through shops largely occupied by small-scale business owners dealing in vegetable oil processing, plastic recycling, and nylon production.
Officials from the Kano State Fire Service were deployed to the scene to contain the blaze. However, by the time the fire was brought under control, about 50 shops had been destroyed, with goods and equipment worth millions of naira reduced to ashes. As of the latest reports, there were no confirmed casualties.
Traders affected by the incident expressed frustration over what they described as delayed emergency response, arguing that quicker intervention might have minimized the damage. Many of them rely solely on their daily sales for survival, and the destruction has left several families uncertain about their next source of income.
The incident comes shortly after the devastating fire at Singer Market, where over 1,000 shops were reportedly affected, leading to massive financial losses. The recurrence of such disasters has intensified calls for improved fire safety infrastructure, better market planning, and stricter enforcement of electrical and safety regulations in commercial hubs across Kano.
Authorities are expected to launch an investigation to determine the cause of the fire, as stakeholders urge proactive measures to prevent another tragedy in one of northern Nigeria’s busiest trading centres.
